Speaking on MSNBC’s “Hardball” Sunday, Booker was asked if he believed Comey’s decision to exonerate Clinton and announce it weeks before the election, in the final days of the campaign, hurt her.
“I do,” Booker answered. “I think it was fundamentally unfair. I think, you know, he had an obligation to be much more transparent. And that’s why, you know, that’s why there are a lot of people who think that, you know, there are a lot of questions about this investigation.”
Booker pointed to his repeated calls to the Justice Department inspector general to investigate the FBI’s handling of the Clinton probe. He said he also would call for the inspector general to investigate Comey.
“It’s unacceptable for the FBI to have, you know, its own investigators,” he said. “Its own investigators, including Comey, were not allowed to be completely objective. That’s unacceptable.”
Booker said Comey’s actions led to a “real concern” about whether the FBI was fair, adding, “It was the FBI. It was that investigation that created this distrust and that doubt.”
He also took issue with Comey’s decision to reveal the investigation into Clinton’s private server was taking place at the time it was announced.
